Chulalongkorn University organized a press conference to introduce Chula ARI – An Integration of Disciplines to Support the Aging Society, a collaborative effort of CU professors from different fields to share knowledge and support the elderly in an urban society.
The president of Chulalongkorn University, Professor Dr. Bundhit Eua-arporn reinforces that Chulalongkorn University has the duty and responsibility to develop people for the future, create a knowledge hub, and give back to society. Therefore, the University plans to develop Chulalongkorn University Platform for Aging Research Innovation: Chula ARI, a project to integrate knowledge from different fields to tackle the challenges of the aging population in Thailand. The project will be a collaborative effort of Chulalongkorn professors from various faculties, who have shown interest or have previous research experience on issues related to the elderly. The university plans to work hand in hand with the Department of Older Persons, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, and other public and private sectors. With the Department of Older Persons, Chula ARI is drafting the 3rd National Plan for the Elderly, which is in line with the national strategy to prepare ideas and research for academics, planners, and practitioners, and then hand over the plans to relevant parties.
The focus of this project is to support the health and wealth of senior citizens. During the first three years of the program, CU expects Chula ARI to aid the elderly in the urban areas and hopes to gather enough information to enable a positive progress for society. Associate Professor Dr. Vipan Prachuabmoh, Dean of the College of Population Studies adds that although there already seems to be an abundance of information about the aging society, a platform to collect the information systematically in one place is missing. Additionally, awareness of the aging society is limited. Of concern is that many of the younger generation are not equipped to become quality senior citizens. Chula is determined help lessen these problems, by providing knowledge and systems to form the foundation for a stable economy, enhancing the health of elders, teaching them how to coexist in society, and creating a suitable environment for all. New innovation must be developed to better the quality of life of older adults and reduce inequality in society.
The Director-General of the Department of Older Persons, Ms. Thanaporn Promsuwan, congratulated Chulalongkorn University for launching the Chula ARI. The project will not only help better the lives of the striving elders in today’s society but is a great chance to see different faculties team up for a great cause. In order to solve the issues of the aging society, there needs to be a mutual effort from both the government and academic sector.
